EDE501 Applied Statistics for Analyzing Theses or Research Paper Data

This class prepares students to analyze and/or to conduct actual analyses of real data; these analyses can be for students' theses or dissertations, for a publishable paper, or just for fun. The class focuses the practical knowledge and tools to effectively analyze data using approaches based on the General Linear model (including correlation, regression, testing for mean differences, and testing for mediators and moderators).

Each week students will tackle a different type of analysis, covering the logic and assumptions of each technique, the code needed to conduct the analysis. The lab session will require students to formulate specific research questions based on the week’s theme, to run the analyses to answer that question, and to present the results in the next session.

The class will discuss the interpretation of the analyses, how well each approach answers the questions asked, and what alternative analyses could be used. Students will be encouraged to bring their own data sets, but a data set will also be provided.

This course can be used as a refresher for students whose methods classes were taken several years before the need to do analyses.
